Getting to know Tarzana

Tarzana stretches from the flats near the 101 to estate lots in the hills toward Mulholland. Some of its largest properties sit south of Ventura Boulevard, while neighborhoods near Wilbur and Clark Street offer a different everyday rhythm. Woodcrest School and Wilbur Charter are local school options, and the Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is a major health-care anchor.

Sol y Luna on Ventura Boulevard is a long-running Mexican restaurant with an active Tarzana location. The Tarzana Recreation Center and Mulholland Hills Country Club are other reference points. Compare exact drives to the hospital, freeway and school campuses before choosing between hill and flat addresses.

What gives Tarzana its shape

Tarzana is named for Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, who bought General Harrison Gray Otis’s 550-acre estate in 1919 and called it Tarzan Ranch. As pieces of the ranch became home sites, the name stuck; the Tarzana Neighborhood Council’s history dates the community naming to a 1930 contest. The flat streets around the 101 and the large hillside parcels toward Mulholland still lead to very different home searches. Our historical $6.807 million Vanalden sale is one example of the estate market, but that home was listed again as of this September, so its past sale is not a current valuation.

Trails and golf above the Boulevard

The Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park trailhead at the south end of Reseda Boulevard leads into Santa Monica Mountains open space. Caballero Canyon Trail branches off Reseda before the road ends and connects toward dirt Mulholland. For golf, Mulholland Hills Country Club and El Caballero Country Club are private clubs, not public courses included with a home. Membership and access must be checked directly.

Food, coffee and a corridor in motion

Sol y Luna is an established Ventura Boulevard Mexican restaurant. Off the main road, TLV Tapas Bar at 5442 Yolanda offers a different dinner stop. A Philz Coffee was reported as planned for 18640 Ventura in June 2026, with no firm opening date at the time; its opening should be confirmed before treating it as a current coffee shop. At 19335 Ventura, a mixed-use housing and retail plan was listed as approved in March 2026, not built. The earlier project listing at nearby 19333 Ventura was marked canceled, so the new plan should not be conflated with it.

Schools and the address test

Wilbur Charter for Enriched Academics is a public elementary school and Woodcrest School is private. We check the actual address, enrollment rules and daily route rather than promising a school from a Tarzana label. The medical center on Clark Street, the 101 and hillside trailheads each pull a search in a different direction.

Check the specific address: school eligibility, access, insurance, permits and commute depend on the property.
